ZDT is a personal vocabulary trainer for Chinese. It lets you make vocabulary lists, which can be practiced as if you're using flashcards. It also contains a dictionary which can be searched by characters, pinyin or definition. By default it uses the free CEDICT dictionary, but other dictionaries can be used as well. Another nice feature is the ability to generate the pinyin for a given text in Chinese characters.

When you're practicing using the flashcard mode, the program will keep a score for every flashcard. That way it's possible to see which words you're having difficulty with, and practice only those.

Word lists can be individually exported and imported, so they can be shared over the internet. The page ZDT word lists contains several interesting lists you can use for your own practice.

ZDT is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and is 100% free. (Free as in beer and free as in speech.)

Installation

On the ZDT home page click on "Download" in the upper right hand corner of the screen. This will bring you to a page where you can download the latest version.

There are different versions available depending on your operating system : Windows, Max OS X or Linux

Windows Installation

Click on the link that reads "zdt-<version>-setup-full.exe". A little window should appear that asks you to save the file.

If this doesn't happen look at the page you are on, you should see a text that reads "if you are having problems click on this direct link". When you click on that link the little window should finally appear.

Save the file, remember where you put it! When it's fully downloaded open "My Computer", go to the location where you saved the file and double click on the icon.

If everything went well you should see a window that reads "Welcome to the ZDT setup wizard". Click "Next", "I Agree" and "Next". Now you're asked where to install ZDT. The default is probably OK, just click "Install". Moments later the installation is complete. Click "Finish" and the program will start.

To later on start ZDT click on "Start", "Programs", "ZDT" and "ZDT".
